(July 20, 2012 | USA Today) Aurora, CO. 12 dead, 59 wounded in ‘Dark Knight’ Denver Colorado theater shooting – A gunman wearing a gas mask, helmet and full body armor opened fire early Friday in a crowded suburban Denver theater at the opening of the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 people and injuring at least 59.

Federal law enforcement officials identified the suspect as James Holmes, 24, who lives about 4 miles away from the theater in Aurora. He is in custody.

At the suspect’s home, Oates said investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives were attempting to disarm what appeared to be sophisticated incendiary devices. Officials said the suspect purchased a ticket for the show and once inside the theater propped open an emergency exit door, which he later entered after retrieving four weapons and a tear gas canister. Dressed in dark clothing, he stood at the front of the theater and hurled the canister as he fired into the crowd at around 12:30 a.m. MT at the multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora, police said. “There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead,” Jennifer Seeger said, adding that the gunman, dressed like a SWAT team member, fired steadily except when he stopped to reload.He said the suspect was armed with one AR-15, a Remington 870 shotgun and two 40-caliber Glock handguns.

(May 30, 2012 | ABC News) Man kills four and self in Seattle, Washington – The man who opened fire and killed three people at a Seattle café as officers closed in on him after a citywide manhunt has killed himself, his father confirmed. Police say Ian Stawicki killed a fourth person during a subsequent confrontation on Wednesday after the shootings began at approximately 11 a.m. PST, when he opened fire at Cafe Racer Espresso in Seattle’s University District. Two victims, both male, died at the scene. Two others died later at Harborview Medical Center. The shooting set off
a massive manhunt through Seattle on Tuesday. The second shooting incident occurred in downtown Seattle, about a 15-minute drive from the cafe.  It appears that about 30 minutes after the shooting at the cafe, the suspect in the cafe shooting fled to First Hill, where he fatally shot a woman in a parking lot.

Three men face terrorism and explosives charges in connection with a plot that allegedly included an attack on President Obama’s campaign headquarters, the mayor’s mansion, police stations and squad cars. The men had traveled from Florida to Chicago.Officials said a raid of the apartment in which the men were staying uncovered petroleum bombs known as Molotov cocktails, bows and arrows, throwing stars and gas masks. Thousands of people, including protesters, have been in Chicago for days ahead of the two-day NATO Summit that starts Sunday. “These individuals are domestic terrorists who came to Chicago with an anarchist agenda to harm police officers, intimidate citizens and to attack their politically motivated targets,” said Anita Alvarez, a prosecutor.

Washington. — The CIA thwarted an ambitious plot by al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen to destroy a U.S.-bound airliner using a bomb with a sophisticated new design around the one-year anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said Monday. The plot involved an upgrade of the underwear bomb that failed to detonate aboard a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009. This new bomb was also designed to be used in a passenger’s underwear, but this time al-Qaida developed a more refined detonation system, U.S. officials said. The FBI is examining the latest bomb to see whether it could have passed through airport security and brought down an airplane, officials said. They said the device did not contain metal, meaning it probably could have passed through an airport metal detector.

Four men were charged Thursday with membership in a terrorist organization for allegedly planning to carry out an al Qaeda attack in Germany. The group’s leader — 30-year-old Moroccan national Abdeladim El-Kebir — was also accused of undergoing training at a terror camp in the lawless Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, federal prosecutors said. A 32-year-old German-Moroccan is accused of being responsible for helping produce explosives. A 20-year-old German-Iranian national and 27-year-old man were also arrested. Prosecutors said the “Duesseldorf Cell” was part of a plan by al Qaeda leaders to recruit and train jihadists to carry out terror attacks in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

“According to the results of the investigation, the accused planned to conduct a spectacular terror attack in Germany,” prosecutors said.

The FBI sting operation that led to the arrests of five men in an alleged conspiracy to blow up a Cleveland-area bridge involved now-familiar undercover techniques to identify a potentially dangerous terrorist plot. There were hours of secretly taped conversations involving possible targets and methods of attack collected by an FBI informant who had won the confidence of the alleged plotters and later supplied dummy devices that the suspects believed to contain explosives. What sets the alleged Ohio operation apart is its link to self-proclaimed anarchists — with no connections to international terrorist organizations — who believed that members of the ubiquitous Occupy protest movement had not gone far enough to express their displeasure with high-flying corporate America. More recent plots disrupted by the FBI have focused on traditional terrorist targets — military facilities and crowded public places — with the goal of inflicting mass casualties.

According to federal court documents, Wright, Baxter and Hayne allegedly developed the plot over several months before targeting a bridge over Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Monday night. The other two suspects, Stevens and Stafford, are charged as conspirators. Devices that the suspects allegedly believed to contain the powerful explosive C-4 were provided by an FBI employee, a non-agent specializing in undercover operations, who rendered them inoperable. Two devices were placed at the base of a concrete support pillar for the bridge on Monday night, after which an attempt was made to remotely detonate the dummy explosives. The court documents also refer to several conversations secretly recorded by the FBI informant in which Wright and Baxter allegedly sought to limit the number of casualties in favor of inflicting economic loss on corporate targets.

(May 3, 2012 | AP) Gilbert, Arizona  — Police have identified one of five people killed in a shooting in a Phoenix suburb as a former Marine with ties to neo-Nazi and Minutemen groups. Jason Todd Ready organized a militia in the Arizona desert with the goal of finding illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. The 39-year-old known as “JT” outfitted  himself with military fatigues, body armor and gas masks, and carried assault rifles. Police say the four others killed in Wednesday’s shootings in a home in Gilbert  include 16-month-old Lily Lynn Mederos, 23-year-old Amber Nieve Mederos, 47-year-old Lisa Lynn Mederos and 24-year-old Jim Franklin Hiott.

(April 7, 2012 | NewsCore) Manhunt underway for “lone wolf gunman” behind unprecedented Tulsa shooting spree, 3 Dead TULSA, Okla. – The FBI joined the manhunt Saturday for a “lone wolf” gunman suspected of killing three people and injuring two others in four separate shootings in Tulsa. The victims were seemingly shot at random in the street during a roughly seven-hour period early Friday. Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan told reporters local authorities are working with the FBI and-US Marshals Service “to determine who the suspect is in this case and bring him to justice.” Jordan said “Identifying a lone wolf suspect who acted independently is going to be a real challenge.”

(March 27, 2012 | USA Today) JetBlue pilot flips out, is subdued by passengers. — A JetBlue flight from JFK Airport, New York to Las Vegas was forced to land in Texas today after passengers had to subdue the plane’s pilot, who shouted about bombs and Al-Qaeda. CNN quotes one passenger, Tom Murphy, as saying that the captain had come into the cabin and initially tried to break into a locked bathroom, then banged on the cockpit door. At one point, Murphy tells CNN, the flight attendants tried to take the pilot to the back of the plane, but he broke free and ran to the front, threatening to blow up the plane and saying there was a bomb on board.

According to an msnbc.com article, during the flight, the pilot was allegedly running up and down the aisles screaming, “Say your prayers! Say your prayers!” said Paul Babakitis, a passenger.

Original post: Flight 191 had 135 passengers and five crewmembers when it took off from JFK Airport at about 10:45 a.m., JetBlue said, according to the airline. The Globe-News quotes Josh Redick, 41, of New York, as saying the crew kicked the pilot out of the cockpit, and he turned unruly and tried to use the intercom system, which had been disabled. Heidi Karg tells CNN that there was a lot of commotion and that she heard the captain shout the word “bomb.”

(March 16, 2012 | ABC News) Osama Bin Laden Plot to Kill President Obama and David Petraeus. — The Washington Post’s David Ignatius has a good scoop about papers found in the Osama bin Laden compound.  ABC News can confirm that bin Laden wrote to others in al Qaeda about a plot to kill President Obama and General David Petraeus, then the commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan,  writing: “The reason for concentrating on them, is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make Biden take over the presidency… Biden is totally  unprepared for that post, which will lead the U.S. into a crisis. As for Petraeus, he is the man of the hour … and killing him would alter the (Afghanistan) war’s path.”
