(Feb. 17, 2012 | New York Times) ROME — The Italian police arrested 8 people on charges related to the seizure of $6 trillion in fake United States Treasury bonds, in a mysterious scheme that stretched from Hong Kong to Switzerland to the southern Italian region of Basilicata.
The value of the seized bonds is nearly half of the United States’ entire public debt of $15.36 trillion. Rather than counterfeit, they were fictitious, printed in 6,000 units of $1 billion each, a denomination that does not exist. Prosecutors said that the false bonds “posed concrete and grave dangers for the stability of the international credit system.” It is the largest financial fraud in history.

Washington D.C. — A 29-year-old man from Morocco was arrested Friday and charged with attempting to bomb the U.S. Capitol building in a suicide attack, authorities said. Suspect Amine El Khalifi made an initial appearance in court and, if convicted, faces a maximum penalty of life in prison, according to the Justice Department.
He allegedly went to a parking garage near the Capitol on Friday and received what he thought was a vest with explosives and a firearm, both of which had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement. He was arrested before leaving the garage.
“Today’s case underscores the continuing threat we face from homegrown violent extremists,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security Lisa Monaco. “Thanks to a coordinated law enforcement effort, El Khalifi’s alleged plot was thwarted before anyone was harmed.”
The suspect was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against government property.

(January 6, 2012 | AP) WASHINGTON — A burst of hiring in December pushed the unemployment rate to its lowest level in nearly three years, giving the economy a boost at the end of 2011. The Labor Department said Friday that employers added 200,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, the lowest since February 2009. The rate has dropped for four straight months. The hiring gains cap a six-month stretch in which the economy generated 100,000 jobs or more in each month. That hasn’t happened since April 2006.

(ABC News | November 20, 2011) – Terror plot thwarted, man arrested in NYC making bombs – A Muslim convert arrested for allegedly making bombs in New York City was inspired by radical cleric Anwar Awlaki and was allegedly plotting to attack U.S. servicemen and police officers, according to officials. A five-count criminal complaint against Jose Pimentel of Washington Heights says that Pimentel planned “to build a bomb and use it to assassinate U.S. servicemen and women returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.” New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg said during a press conference this evening that Pimentel, an unemployed loner who lives with his mother, also wanted to kill police officers, and called him a “27-year-old al Qaeda sympathizer.” “We had to act quickly,” New York police commissioner Ray Kelly said, “because he was in fact putting this bomb together.” When arrested, officials say, Pimentel possessed the materials necessary to build a bomb.

NBC News | November 14, 2011 – A new study finds promise in stem cell treatment for heart attack victims. The human body has an amazing ability to repair itself when damaged. Now doctors are finding some success at harnessing those abilities in order to restore heart function after a heart attack.
Virginia Dolan survived a massive heart attack in 2010. The active grandmother faced a life sentence of reduced heart function, limiting her lifestyle.
In a clinical trial at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, doctors took stem cells from her bone marrow, and then injected them into her heart. When the heart is damaged, the body sends signals to attract stem cells to the heart to help it heal.”The problem is they’re not strong enough to repair heart muscle back to its normal state,” says Dr. Daniel Simon. So doctors take them out of the body, give them some muscle in a lab and inject them directly into the damaged area.
A year later her heart is operating at near normal capacity. Another study from the University of Louisville suggests using cardiac stem cells can improve blood flow and decrease scar tissue following a heart attack.
