Scientists discover way to make immune system prevent fat from building up in arteries. — A vaccine delivered in an injection or nasal spray to prevent heart attacks could be available within five years. Swedish scientists have discovered a way to make a vaccine that stimulates the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that prevent heart disease by stopping fat building up in the arteries. The vaccine can cut the build-up of fat in arteries by 60 to 70 per cent, in tests on mice by researchers at Lund University in Sweden. Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said the vaccine was “very promising.”

(March 31, 2012 | HealthDay News) Diabetes Drug Might Also Help Fight Cancer. – A diabetes medication used by millions is now showing promise against a variety of different cancers. Two new clinical studies to be presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, in Chicago, found that metformin appeared linked to a slowing in the rate of prostate cancer growth and in prolonging life for early-stage pancreatic cancer patients. Other studies, done either in the lab or in animals, also hint that the drug might have an effect against liver or oral tumors, as well as certain forms of melanoma.

“There are very exciting clues from laboratory studies and population studies that metformin . . . may improve cancer outcomes or lower cancer risk,” said Dr. Michael Pollak, professor of oncology and of medicine at McGill University in Montreal. Metformin has also shown promise against colon and breast cancer, noted Pollak.

(March 30, 2012 | Drugs.com News) Drugs May Stop Spread of Cancer. — Two drugs previously thought to be too toxic for human cancer treatment may stop the growth of cancer cells without killing healthy cells and damaging DNA when used in small doses, researchers have found. Unlike conventional chemotherapy drugs, which poison and kill any rapidly dividing cells by damaging cellular machinery and DNA, these drugs — azacitidine (AZA) and decitabine (DAC) — specifically target cancer stem cells, which cause cancer to spread and are resistant to most drugs.

“Low doses of AZA and DAC may reactivate genes that stop cancer growth without causing immediate cell killing or DNA damage,” Dr. Stephen Baylin, a professor of oncology and deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, said in a news release from Hopkins. The drugs have been effective in treating a small number of patients with advanced lung cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome. Based on those positive clinical outcomes, the Johns Hopkins researchers decided to re-evaluate the drugs for use in cancer treatment.

(March 27, 2012 | USA Today) JetBlue pilot flips out, is subdued by passengers. — A JetBlue flight from JFK Airport, New York to Las Vegas was forced to land in Texas today after passengers had to subdue the plane’s pilot, who shouted about bombs and Al-Qaeda. CNN quotes one passenger, Tom Murphy, as saying that the captain had come into the cabin and initially tried to break into a locked bathroom, then banged on the cockpit door. At one point, Murphy tells CNN, the flight attendants tried to take the pilot to the back of the plane, but he broke free and ran to the front, threatening to blow up the plane and saying there was a bomb on board.

According to an msnbc.com article, during the flight, the pilot was allegedly running up and down the aisles screaming, “Say your prayers! Say your prayers!” said Paul Babakitis, a passenger.

Original post: Flight 191 had 135 passengers and five crewmembers when it took off from JFK Airport at about 10:45 a.m., JetBlue said, according to the airline. The Globe-News quotes Josh Redick, 41, of New York, as saying the crew kicked the pilot out of the cockpit, and he turned unruly and tried to use the intercom system, which had been disabled. Heidi Karg tells CNN that there was a lot of commotion and that she heard the captain shout the word “bomb.”

(March 26, 2012 | AP) CHICAGO. Studies: Weight loss surgery can put diabetes into remission — New research gives clear proof that weight-loss surgery can reverse and possibly cure diabetes.

The two studies are the first to compare stomach-reducing operations to medicines alone for “diabesity” — Type 2 diabetes brought on by obesity. Millions of Americans have this and can’t make enough insulin or use what they do make to process sugar from food. Both studies found that surgery helped far more patients achieve normal blood-sugar levels than medicines alone did.

The results were dramatic: Some people were able to stop taking insulin as soon as three days after their operations. Cholesterol and other heart risk factors also greatly improved. Doctors don’t like to say “cure” because they can’t promise a disease will never come back. But in one study, most surgery patients were able to stop all diabetes drugs and have their disease stay in remission for at least two years. None of those treated with medicines alone could do that.

(March 20, 2012 | WebMD Health News) Daily Aspirin May Help Prevent and Treat Cancer. New Research Shows Aspirin Appears to Slow Cancer Growth, May Add to Drug’s Uses – Millions of Americans who take an aspirin every day to lower their risk for heart attack and stroke may also be lowering their cancer risk. New research adds to the growing evidence that daily aspirin may help prevent certain cancers from occurring. On top of that, daily aspirin may also be an effective treatment for people who already have cancer. In a series of studies published in The Lancet, researchers in the UK expanded on previous research linking daily low-dose or full-strength aspirin use to a reduced risk of death from cancer over a decade of follow-up. In their latest work, the researchers examined the short-term impact of aspirin therapy on cancer, finding a reduction in cancers after about three years of daily aspirin use, says University of Oxford professor of medical neurology Peter M. Rothwell, MD, PhD, who led the studies. People taking aspirin for as few as five years had a lower risk of dying from cancer and of having their disease spread once it had been diagnosed.

Daily Aspirin Reduced Cancer Deaths
In one of the new studies, Rothwell and colleagues analyzed data from 51 trials originally designed to examine the impact of daily aspirin on heart attack and stroke risk. According to the analysis, taking a low-dose aspirin every day reduced the risk of death from cancer by 37% after at least five years of use.

(March 16, 2012 |ABC News) Tornadoes Rip Through Michigan, Destroy or Damage Over 100 Homes. — A tornado touchdown was reported in Dexter and the surrounding area northwest of Ann Arbor, Michigan Thursday night. The National Weather Service  said a “significant” tornado touched down in Washtenaw County at about 5:15 p.m., and there were over 200 reports of severe weather Thursday from Tennessee through Michigan. “The temperatures dropped, the clouds were crazy colors and we could hear the wind as it got closer and got bigger. It sounded like a train coming. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Dexter resident Matthew Altruda.

As for Petraeus, he is the man of the hour … and killing him would alter the (Afghanistan) war’s path.”

London — A 40-year-old woman was arrested Thursday in south London on suspicion of terror offenses, the Metropolitan Police said. She was detained in the early hours by counterterrorism officers and taken to a police station for questioning, a police statement said. A home is also being searched. Her arrest is in connection with the alleged posting of extremist material on the Internet. ”We are liaising with the Italian authorities to establish whether there is any link to an arrest they made earlier this morning,” the statement added. Italian police said they had arrested a 20-year-old Moroccan-born man early Thursday in northern Italy on suspicion of planning an attack on a synagogue in Milan. Claudio Galzerano, head of the anti-terrorist unit of the Italian police, told CNN in a phone interview that the suspect, Jarmoune Mohamed, had been detained in the city of Brescia. Police found detailed plans of the synagogue on Via della Guastella in Milan on Mohamed’s computer. He described the operation as an “important preventive operation” but also said there was “a very high risk” that the planned attack might be carried out.

(March 15, 2012 | ABC News) One dead, several injured in Texas Courthouse Shooting — The woman who police say was shot and run over with a truck by her father in front of a Texas courthouse had accused both her father and her uncle of sexually assaulting her, authorities told ABCNews.com today. Bartholomew Granger, 41, was scheduled to appear in a Beaumont, Texas, court Wednesday afternoon and his 20-year-old daughter was expected to continue her testimony against him that she began Tuesday in his sexual assault trial. Granger opened fire at the courthouse as his ex-wife and daughter were about the enter the building, wounding both of them, police said. He then drove his truck over his daughter, according to police. The shooting at the courthouse erupted at 11:21 a.m. Wednesday when Granger allegedly began firing from a truck in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse.
In addition to his daughter and ex-wife, Granger shot at two bystanders, killing 79-year-old Minnie Ray Seabolt, police said. After Granger’s truck was disabled, he ran about one block to a business and took hostages inside the establishment.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a brief tsunami advisory. This temblor comes three days after the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands in Japan, and triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century.
